Nisshinkan was built in 1803 with the purpose of being the best place for personal development. Children of samurai enrolled at the age of 10 to work hard in the martial arts to discipline the mind and body. An 8000-tsubo (6.5 acres) martial arts field, an observatory, and Japan's oldest swimming pool with water training for horses too, ensured that at the end of that era Byakkotai youths become superb, intelligent, and skilled people of good character.
The old facilities have now been faithfully restored to their original state at Nisshinkan, and you can see the authentic magnificent Edo architecture and old style gymnasium. Besides this, you can personally experience zazen, archery, and other martial arts. You can also experience painting Aizu talisman "akabeko" and "Okiagari koboshi" roly-poly dolls that always right themselves when tipped.
