Tenkyodai is 700 meters up on Mt. Bandai, and was formed by lava that belched out about 30,000 years ago. Behind it rises Mt. Bandai, in front of which it is possible to see Lake Inawashiro and, in the distance, Minami Aizu and the peaks of Mt. Nasu. The terrain has the stepped escarpment of a fault, which is also visible.
In addition, when the magma was exposed to air and cooled, it hardened into a breadcrust-like volcanic balls.
