This is an extremely valuable display of subarctic plants growing in a moor at a high elevation, and because of its importance, in Showa 3 (1928) it was designated a National Natural Monument.

The moor has a 3.4 meter layer of peat deposited over a period of about 20,000 years as stratified lake sediment, covering an area of about 68 hectares, and creating this natural monument. There are more than 200 species of wild plants, among them 38 from the northern area, and insects such as Nannophya pygmaea (Scarlet Dwarf dragonflies), which are about 1 cm in length, also live here and make these wetlands of great academic value.

In September, 1961(Showa 36), the Emperor did some research here and the following year at the annual New Year's poetry reading, he read his poem:
"The rains clear off and the sphagnum moss of the bog becomes dry;
To behold a cloudberry; Oh, what joy!"
And this is printed on the monument on a hill here.
