At 3.9 square kilometers, Lake Akimoto is second in size only to Hibara, and was created by mudslides blocking off two rivers, the Ogura and the Okura, which are both about the size of the Nakatsu River.
The elevation of the water is lower than that of Lakes Hibara and Onogawa, so it gets overflow from those two able to create 62,000 kilowatts of electric power at the Akimoto Power Plant. The area where the water of the Nakatsu River Gorge flows in is the number one cycling course because of the breathtaking greenery and autumn colors.
