In Meiji 5 (1872), Dutch engineer Van Doorn visited Japan at the invitation of the Japanese government and designed Asakasosui to carry on for 52 km by using the natural drop from Lake Inawashiro. At that time, irrigating the barren Azumi Plain formed the basis for Koriyama's development. Today the flow from Asakasosui has a new outlet that is used to produce hydroelectric power, and this electricity has been sent as far as the Toyko metropolitan area.
