Bonari Pass is a famous battlefield from the Boshin War, when the West Army aimed for Aizu, and the East Army was waiting for them after distributing and positioning their forces. Bonari Pass was the road most difficult to pass through, so there didn't seem so much need for great military strength there.
The West army made an unexpected attack here. On the West Army side were Itagaki Taisuke, Tani Kanjo, and Ijichi Shoji who, joined together with Satsuma, Tosa, Choshu, and Sadohara clans, provided 3,000 soldiers. The East Army had Otori Keisuke's unit, Hijikata Toshizo, Saito Hajime and others of the Shinsen Company; 800 soldiers from the Aizu and Sendai Clans. Otori Keisuke was the commander of the unit and although all fought bravely, they were no match for the superior force, and were beaten.
Today there is a stone monument at Bonari Pass marking the spot of the historic battlefield.
