Nowadays in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, at the east end of Shinmei Street by the east side of the main building of Kotoku Temple, you will find the tomb of Gamo Ujisato, who stimulated industry and improved and developed this castle town. Zuiunzan Kotoku Temple had a connection with the Rinzai sect’s Myoshin Temple, and when Hideyoshi came to Aizu to take Oshu, he stayed three days at this large temple.
On the five-stage monument are inscribed the five characters for sky, wind, fire, water and earth, and it is said to contain a few bones brought from his main grave at Kyoto’s Daitoku Temple. In front, the words of a poem, “The mountain sakura’s blossom has its time, and doesn’t want to blow off and fall, but the mountain wind seems not to grasp this with its short memory”, were written as a project by Aizu’s historical board in Showa 28 (1953) on the occasion of the 360th anniversary.
