This lake was created by the eruption of Mt. Bandai. It is the largest of the Urabandai lakes, and is completely encircled by a lakeshore road, making touring by car easy. On the shore there are pleasure craft, nature trails, and campgrounds, making it the main target of Urabandai sightseeing. In green season it is popular for bass fishing, and winter offers smelt, ice fishing and more. There is an easy hiking road, a suspension bridge, with scenery spread out before you so that you can see the deep-cut shape of the lake and its floating small islands. The area north of the lake became the stage for the 2009 NHK television Taiga Drama, "Tenchibito" because it was the Aizu-Yonezawa Road. In 1888 Mt. Bandai's big eruption left the village of Hibara at the bottom of the lake.
