This monument containing the Hokyo Sutra is the grave of Jotanbo.
Jotanbo was the big cheese at Enichi Temple during its heyday, and it is said that at the end of the Heiian Era he mobilized thousands of militant monks.
In June of the first year of Yowa (1181), Taira got an order from the powerful Echigo family to join with them in order to drive away Kiso Yoshinaka, and they engaged four Aizu forces in fighting, but at Shinshu Yokota Kawahara (Now Nagano Prefecture Shinonoi district), they were defeated and killed. After his death, Aizu Enichi Temple's influence declined gradually. We can read details of this battle in "The Tale of Heike"
This Hokyoin monument's height is 2.7 meters, the stone base displays a lovely shaped foliate panel, and on the tower's four faces are carved Sanskrit characters. The cap piece is a little off balance but the corner decoration is straight, in keeping with the old style.

On the whole, it has substantial local color, and we think this prayer memorial tower was built at the end of the Middle Ages.
