This area in Mt. Bandai foothills Surikamihara was a training ground for the Okinajima Army where multitudes of youth trained for battle, and became the battle field for the fight between Ashina Yoshihiro and Date Masamune.
Kompas Matsu had been used first with the objective of military practice, and then people living in the area used it as a place for R&R during breaks in their farm work.
In 2002, after the tree was downed by heavy snow, it was restored as an anti-war symbol at which to pray for peace.
