In Keicho 5 (1600) Aizu Daimyo Uesugi Kagekatsu opened the area at Kozashihara so it could use water from the O River, and began construction of a castle. However, construction was discontinued after a few months on June 10 because attack by Tokugawa Ieyasu threatened. Kozashi Castle was left just as it was.
With an area of 55 hectares, twice the size of Tsuruga Castle, Kozashi Castle would have seemed enormous when completed. But today only traces of the castle keep and the outer citadel remain
