Sagawa Kanbe was born in Tenpo 2 (1831). He died in Meiji 10 (1877). His samurai character and mental acuity were great, and he served as the school administrator for the Aizu Clan, commanding officer of the Bessen Company, and the Shosei Company, and he was called 適isagawa・and 適ikanbe・(Demon Sagawa & Demon Kanbe). Fighting was severe at the Battle of Tobafushimi and the Boshin War痴 Battle of Hokuetsu and, as Aizu Army痴 commander, he worked together here and there with Nagaoka Clan痴 Kawai Keinosuke during the fighting. After the battles, Meiji 7 (1877), he wanted to become a control officer and in the Meiji 10 Seinan war he went into battle as the police superintendent and died at Kurokawa Village.
This memorial monument was erected in Heisei 13 (2001). It commemorates the place where Sagawa Kanbe was killed in the Satsuma Rebellion, and its large stone was sent from Kumamoto Prefecture, Minami Aso Village.
