The ruins of Saigo Tanomo's residence are located in front of Tsuruga Castle in Ote Town.
Saigo Tanomo Chikanori was a senior statesman from the House of Saigo (descendant of Aizu Clan) and, during the Boshin War, as chief of the group was worth the value of 4,000 tons of rice. Together with Tanaka Tosa, Tanomo informed Aizu clan boss Matsudaira that they wished to be relieved of their duties and stop guarding Kyoto.
During the Boshin War he tried to talk peace but the hawks wanted to take his life. When the West Army stormed the castle town, Tanomo escaped from the castle, but his family of 21 members killed themselves, leaving behind a poetic epitaph.
The death song of his wife, Chieko, on "Nayotake Monument" is erected by her grave at Zenryu Temple.
