In the service of the lord of the Aizu clan as chief retainer for three generations.
When he was appointed as chief retainer at the age of 34, the Aizu clan was experiencing Tenmei Era's big famine. Gen Osamu asked Daimyo Katanobu to aid the citizens of his dominion and reform the Clans・government, but his request was refused and so he malingered for a while. In the meantime, he studied economy and military science, and after one year he returned to his job and again insisted that there be a "Tenmei reform" and indeed this came about in spades. In addition, he established a clan school, "Nisshinkan" and laid the foundation for the Aizu clan to become greater with a burgeoning of both literary and military arts.
When Aizu Clan forces went as far as Sakhalin, he left this world at the age of 61. Before he died he requested, "Bury my bones where I can look upon Tsuruga Castle and Nisshinkan" so he was laid to rest on the summit of Mt. Oda.
