On August 22, 1686 (Keio 4), When the Battle of Bonari Pass was over, the West Army destroyed Inawashiro castle, and went on to Tonokuchi. Byakkotai Second Squad fought the west Army at this battleground. The West Army became gradually stronger, and the East Army Reserve's commander Koike Hanji was killed; what remained of his troops withdrew little by little. Byakkotai Second Squad headed for Tsuruga Castle and slipped through the mouth of a cave. As they got to Iimoriyama, they saw a conflagration and smoke at the base of Wakamatsu Castle and thought the castle was done for, and in their ignorance, the deeply saddened youths despaired and killed themselves.
Tonokuchi Battlefield was the site of Byajkkotai Second Squad's last battle. Today, a monument to them stands here. There are monuments for the deceased all over the place.
