On July 15, 1888, Mt. Bandai had a massive eruption.
This catastrophe was felt all over the world, and aftershocks continued for a long time, plunging the villagers into the depths of fear. It is said that the ash from the volcano even blocked out the sunlight. It was "just like a large wild boar (yamakujira) on a rampage" that angered the mountain gods. To placate the wrath of yamakujira, the villagers made a religious float like the boar, and prayed intently.
Following this, the aftershocks subsided little by little, the sunlight returned, and the people were delighted to come and worship the beast-god image of Yamakujira. Since then, every year there is a festival held to pray to the mountain gods for a good harvest, and give thanks.
