Every couple of kilometers, on both sides of the road there is a mound with a Japanese hackberry tree and other plants on it as a distance marker. During the Edo Sogunate these were planted in this fashion all over the country. Yoji Milepost is about 32 kilometers from the Wakamatsu Fudano starting point, between the Aizu boundary marker and the Nihonmatsu marker on the old Nihonmatsu highway.
This road goes over Yoji Pass to Nakayama, Yokokawa, Nawashiroda, Nihonmatsu, and Motomiya. These days, these mounds have been left on both sides of the road only here and at the Gojoranba 4-kilometer marker, giving this high importance as a valuable site in the history of travel.
