When Aizu Clan Lord Hoshina Masayuki came to Aizu, he built this temple to protect the Hoshina ancestral spirits.
Daimyo minister Saigo Tanomo's wife Chieko died during the Boshin War and said "Like the soft bamboo (nayotake) left to the mercy of the wind, I must follow the current, but it is an honor to die in my own way" this was the spirit of Aizu and the duty of women. This became a famous saying and it was written on the "Nayotake Monument" erected in Showa 3 (1928). On the back side are inscribed the names of 233 ladies from the Aizu clan who died during the Boshin War. Every year on May 1, the Nayotake Festival is held at the cemetery.
At the rear of the cemetery are the graves of Saigo Tanomo and his wife, along with the "Graves of 21 people" who killed themselves in his house.
