The second Tokugawa shogun's child was born here, became Aizu's feudal Lord Hoshina Masayuki, and had this as his shrine.
Masayuki died in December of 1672, having first expressed his wishes to be buried here.
The first structure was destroyed by fire during the Boshin War, and in 1880 the current building was erected.
Inside, on top of a turtle stone there is the grave monument stone, the largest in Japan, with a height of 7.3 meters and weighing 30 tons.
The trees surrounding it have lovely colorful foliage during all four seasons, so please come here and have a look. We especially recommend the autumn color viewing season.
