In first year of Kyotoku (1452), Kensai, the child of Inawashiro Shosukemori, was born in Kodairagata on the Inawashiro lakeshore. When he was a child he became a Buddhist, and took the priest's name of Koshun. Later, at 39, he went to Kyoto and became a master of linked verse, and worked as master for Kitano Rengakai Sho Bungyo. After that, he left Kyoto for Iwaki Odate, his base for travel here and there working in Aizu, Iwashiro, Shimotsuke, and Kamitsuke. In Eisho 6 (1509), he went to Furukawa to recover his health but the next year, Eisho 7 (1510), he died.

"In the early summer rain, the pines fade away in the distance at Shuzakiya" is his famous verse tribute to the scenery of his home area.
