Kohiragata Tenmangu is set in a pine forest on the north coast of Lake Inawashiro at Tenjin Beach, and is considered to be one of Japan's three major Tenmangu shrines. It is said that at this Tenmangu, people prayed at childbirth for Inawashiro Kensai who, at the end of the Muromachi Era, laid the foundation for the linked verse that lived after him and formed the basis for modern waka poetry. Every year many students come to this shrine to worship Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning.
