Gamo Ujisato divided Wakamatsu Town into a castle town for samurai to live in and an area outside to be inhabited by the townspeople, and separated them with a deep moat, and a rampart with 16 gates.
In Meiji 4, the moat was filled in to be used for fields.
Goga Town entrance gate in the stone wall is the only one remaining.
From Meiji to Showa, the area outside the castle had a building housing the bell, but after WW II it was moved back inside the castle.
