Kitakata Kuranosato was built in the style of an old storehouse (kura) with the object of showing the style and culture to future generations. On a site of 4,000 square meters, the main point inside is a garden, and then the warehouse, miso storehouse, granary, tatami residential outbuildings in a curved style, etc. Kura and residences make a nostalgic Japanese scene.
In the old days, Kitakata City was known by different kanji, meaning "North Way (Kita Kata)" In the Edo Period it was a distribution point for the many things that were gathered together here. Moreover, this is at the meeting point on the road between Wakamatsu Castle area and Yonezawa, so it grew and prospered. Kitakata City still has over 4,200 old kura here and there all over the place.
In the town, before going from kura to kura, why not acquire a knowledge of Kitakata culture and history?
