During the Boshin War, Nakano Takeko was the leader of a young women’s squadron, and she was killed bravely fighting near the Yanagi Bridge.
In Showa 13 (1938) Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Kanzashimachi erected a monument to her at Kurokawa’s Yukawa Bridge. As she went to battle she fixed these words to her sword: “My heart cannot hold a candle to the fierce heart of a samurai but maybe I can be of some account…”
