Okei was a nursemaid for the family of Henry Schnell, the Prussian military advisor to the Aizu Clan. After the Boshin war, Schnell lead away his family and a group of the Aizu samurai. They settled in California, but his enterprise there failed, so the emigrants went their own ways. Okei stayed on, and Americans took care of her, but she developed a serious fever and her life was cut short when she was 19. This monument on Seiaburi Mountain is similar to her mountain gravesite in California's Gold Hill.
