In Tensho 17 (1589), June 5 on the old calendar, Date Masamune wanted to attack Ashina’s area, Aizu, and went to Suriagehara with his army. At this battlefield, Ashina Yoshihiro was helped by his three retainers, Kanagami Moribi, Sase Shutsune, and youngster, Heihachiro Tsuneo, but they were killed.
To tell future generations of their allegiance, ninth-generation Aizu Lord Matsudaira Katataka erected this in Kaei 3(1850). The monument’s inscription was chosen by Aizu’s Katataka and contains selected writings with 437 Chinese characters in all, making this inscription an important and rare monument.
